Why a Strong Onboarding Process Makes All the Difference for Your New Employees
Having recently started a new job, I couldn’t be more grateful for my employer’s onboarding process. It reminded me how much those first few weeks shape the way an employee experiences a new company. Despite being a small business, I felt more supported in my onboarding than I ever have when joining a big company.
Many employers brush off onboarding, regarding it as a necessary faff rather than something that can make or break their new starter’s work journey. But having experienced both an impersonal, ‘check box’ onboarding process and a tailored, communicative one, I can vouch for the importance of truly taking the time to welcome and support your new employees. It not only helps employees feel confident from day one but also sets the foundation for stronger engagement and long-term retention.
After being offered my current position, I remained in regular contact with my manager until my first day of the job. They made sure to check in on how I was feeling, share what my first couple of weeks would look like and ask how they could make me most comfortable in the office.
Once I had started, I was given my own employee onboarding plan, tailored specifically to my skills and style of work (which I had shared in our previous conversations). It outlined the people I’d meet, the systems I’d learn and the goals for my first few weeks. I felt genuinely listened to and understood, which made me even more excited about the role and its responsibilities.
When speaking with one of our candidates, they shared that at their two previous companies, they had lacked a proper onboarding process, having little contact with their HR department and manager up until their first day. This left them feeling lost and unprepared coming into their role, as though they simply expected to know what to do without any support
A strong onboarding process can make a noticeable difference to an employee and their start-of-work journey, making them feel more comfortable, reassured and excited to step into their new role. Onboarding is often overlooked, but it plays a crucial role in shaping an employee’s first impression of your business. Make sure the experience you offer is one that sets them up to succeed.
