Should You Send a Thank You Email After the Interview?

Picture this:

You have just finished the final stage in the interview process; you are excited and full of emotion. The interview went well and you are feeling really confident about the whole process, you REALLY want this job!

During this moment you think “should I send a follow up ‘thank you’ email?”

On one hand you don’t want to bother the busy recruiter and wonder if it would be too much.

Here’s Why You Should Send a Thank You Email:

  • It will help you to stand out from other candidates who don’t send a follow-up thank you.
  • Helps you to highlight more of your professional skills such as your writing skills, how you build rapport, your IT skills….
  • It’s also a great opportunity to tell the employer that you want this job and remind them why you are so well suited to the role and company (keep it short, it’s not a sales pitch!)
  • You can also clarify any points you think may have been missed in the interview, or experiences you didn’t explain fully or that you forgot to mention.
  • Thanking someone for sharing their time is also polite.

What Should You Include in a Thank You Email?

  1. Remember to actually say thank you to the interviewer(s) for taking the time to meet with you. Personalise it by including the job title of the role you interviewed for and adding ‘this morning’ for example.
  2. Keep the content of the message concise and positive, 3 paragraphs max.
  3. Personalise your message based on the conversation you had in the interview, extend on an answer you gave or share more information if relevant.
  4. Your thank you doesn’t always have to be written in an email, you could send the message via LinkedIn or send a video message in an email. Consider what the most appropriate for the person you met and the job you are going for. You can also send your thank you via your recruiter if more appropriate.
  5. If you are emailing, work on a great subject line to capture the person’s attention – for example:
    1. RE: Thank you for meeting with me today
    2. RE: Thanks for the great interview this morning
  6. Remember to offer to provide any further information or answer any additional questions if required before you sign off your thank you.

A short-and-sweet thank you

Hi Recruiter,

Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me this morning. It was a pleasure to learn more about the Conference Producer role, and I’m very excited about the opportunity to join Global Events and help your team create and deliver outstanding events.

I look forward to hearing from you about next steps, but please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can provide any additional information.

Many thanks,

Candidate

A specific thank you email thank you

Hi Recruiter,

I wanted to thank you for inviting me to your office this morning. It was great to hear about Global Events conferences and marketing products, as well as learn more about the growth of the Life Science events portfolio where the Conference producer vacancy sits.

Global Events seems like a wonderful place to work—and not just because mentioned the career progression and training opportunities! I really admire the values that underpin your business, and look forward to the opportunity to help your conference team implement some of the ideas I mentioned around the event format development.

Please let me know if there’s anything else you need from me to move the process forward.

Enjoy the rest of your week,

Candidate

A little bit more in your thank you

Hi Recruiter,

Thank you so much for meeting with me this morning. I really enjoyed learning more about your ambitions and growth plans for Global Events (and hearing how you have reached this point in the company history – so impressive!) and where you see the career opportunity arising for Conference Producers in the next couple years.

To follow up on our conversation about producing exciting and immersive events, I’ve attached a short presentation up on my initial ideas for achieving this for 2024. Happy to discuss further if you see it being a helpful resource.

I can tell Global Events is a special place to work, and I would be thrilled to join such an innovative, hardworking, and ambitious team of professionals. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can provide to make your hiring decision easier.

Best regards,

Candidate
