This prolonged state of exhaustion is known as burnout and if you have ever felt like this, you are not alone.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn a 2021 survey by Mental Health UK and YouGov, they found \u2018one in five UK workers felt unable to manage pressure and stress at work\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tContinuing in a state of burnout for too long can have detrimental consequences on your life and mental health as Amy, a Conference Producer from London, experienced recently.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAmy worked at a large events company and experienced burnout earlier this year after increased pressure from work started to impact her health.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt wasn\u2019t uncommon for me to have a headache from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cNot matter how many hours I slept I never felt rested it was just a general weariness and fatigue and I started developing strange body aches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI thought \u2018maybe I\u2019m not drinking enough water\u2019 or \u2018these body aches are because I sit in a desk chair all day\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cBurnout is quite insidious in that you can feel so worn out and tired and very slowly you forget what normal feels like.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI was working late nights and weekends. I missed birthdays, parties, and nearly a friend\u2019s wedding because of sheer exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI remember going to a friend\u2019s birthday and not drinking because I had to get up early for work in the morning and it would be a Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n\t<strong>\u201cMy doctor told me if I don\u2019t take time off soon, I was going to end up in hospital.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cEventually my doctor told me if I don\u2019t take time off soon, I was going to end up in hospital. I felt broken as a person.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI ended up taking two months of sick leave where it took me six to seven weeks for just the headaches to stop, and that was with pure rest. I am still recovering six months later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cBurnout slowly infects the rest of your life until it becomes this nexus of work, and it becomes a very sad and unfulfilling way to live.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAmy is one of the thousands of workers that experience burnout each year.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn 2019, the World Health Organisation classified occupational burnout as a \u2018syndrome\u2019 caused by \u2018chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThere are several different symptoms of burnout to be aware of.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tPhysical symptoms:<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Frequent headaches<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Muscle pain<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Constant fatigue<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Disruptive sleep (insomnia)<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Lack of appetite<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Feeling drained of energy<\/p>\n<p>\n\tMental symptoms:<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Feeling overwhelmed<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Feeling alone and\/or trapped<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Feeling like a failure<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Anxiety<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Depression<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Self-doubt<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A negative outlook on life<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBehavioural symptoms:<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Being disorganised<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Procrastination<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mood swings (more irritable)<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Underperforming<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSome people in your company may be more at risk of burnout, keep a look out for those who are:<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Fully capable of a role but suddenly becoming overwhelmed<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Lacking resources to do their job<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Constantly busy and cannot take on new tasks<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Cannot offload their work<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Taking holiday but working extra hours to make up lost time<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The fixers on a new project<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Working late evenings or weekends to get work done<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Unenthusiastic towards an exciting new task<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRemember: Burnout is not your fault but speaks more to a poor work culture with more systemically rooted issues.
